George Ivanovich Gurdjieff |
Gurdjieff (1877-1949), was born in Alexandropol in the southern Transcucasian part of Russia. His father was Greek an his mother was Armenia. He is the most remarkable spiritual teacher of all times, who remains an enigmatic figure and one of the greatest influential forces in new religious and psychological teachings. During his lifetime, Gurdjieff was considered by those who knew him as an incomparable man. Besides his three books, which present an objective vision of God, the universe and the human being, he created The Movements which represents a central part in his teaching. Gurdjieff composed 200 musical pieces. Most of the Movements music were created in the early years of the Gurdjieff and de Hartmannn relationship, between July 1925 and May 1927. Gurdjieff open his experimental center for the study of consciousness in Fountainbleau in 1922. The Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in Fountainbleau is considered to be the most elaborate of his research centers, which operated from 1922 to 1934 on the grounds of a French mansion that had belonged to a member of the aristocracy in the eighteenth century. Later, in 1924, Gurdjieff travel to New York and Chicago where a considerable American following developed, this specially do to the efforts of Orage. In the following years (1929-49) Gurdjieff returned to the United States in several occasions. During the final period of Gurdjieff's life, 1948-49 many former and new pupils came to Paris to express interest in his ideas and methods and were introduced to Gurdjieff. From 1925 to 1935 Gurdjieff absorbed himself in his writing projects, -shortly after his fatal automobile accident in 1924-, what he called the "three volume series" he title "All and Everything". One year after, he began reading among his students the first volume of this series -Beelzebub's Tales, which played a central role in the continuation of his oral teaching. -"Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson is Gurdjieff's masterpiece and no other book brings us closer to him". -"This book came to provide Gurdjieff with a vast of epic platform for the transmission of his ideas". -"The first truly comprehensive modern myth". Gurdjieff undertook during the early 1930s, the writing of the Second Series of All and Everything, titled Meetings with Remarkable Men. This work is considered to be by many an intend to transmit the story of his childhood education, travels, and thoroughly vivid portraits of his companions in the search for understanding. Also in the early 1930s Gurdjieff began to work on what he called the "Third Series" of All and Everything title, Life is real only then, When "I Am". This final work offers essential insights into Gurdjieff's inner life, teaching, and methods. |
J.G. Bennett was born June 8, 1897, of an American mother and an English father. Bennett makes little reference in his autobiography, Witness, to his childhood. Bennett spent his early chidhood in Italy, where he learned to speak Italian before he spoke English.
